Cedar has dominated the timber Venetian blind market in Australia for over 30 years, with demand peaking in the mid to late ‘90s. The advent of the cheap timber imports including composites, vinyls and plastics eventually had a negative impact on the Venetian blind market, however Cedar is now making a comeback. The inherent value for money that Cedar offers is once again being appreciated by discerning consumers, and the blind manufacturers utilising locally produced slat are seeing increasing demand from retailers.
Western Red Cedar has many well-known attributes that ensure long term performance as a window covering. Cedar is sustainable and 100% biodegradable, it is a good insulator and is lightweight; it has a distinctive pleasant odour and has a visually appealing grain structure. It is renowned as one of the world’s most naturally durable and stable species, and it is unlikely to show any major movement in service.
A recent change in technology has resulted in thinner and wider slats coming onto the market with widths now up to 115mm. This “wide blade blind” concept will see the beginning of another chapter in the Cedar blind story. Coupled with new coating techniques and coloured lacquer options, Cedar now has more to offer than ever to the window fashion industry.

Western Red Cedar Venetian Blinds – adding glamour to any decor

It is becoming apparent that consumers are now more conscious of issues such as a product’s whole life cycle and its impact on the enviroronment. Cedar has impeccable credentials as the ultimate green building material. It is legally, responsibly and sustainably harvested in the publicly managed forests of British Columbia, Canada and less than 1% of standing timber is harvested each year. To ensure the forest will exist in perpetuity, three trees are replanted for every tree harvested.
Western Red Cedar has the least impact on the environment throughout its life cycle and requires less energy to produce than other man made alternatives. Cedar is the timber of choice for window blinds. Architects are increasingly specifying Cedar for its economical pricing and natural durability. Its good looks fit the demanding needs of Venetian Blinds.
