All woods absorb or discharge moisture to attain equilibrium
with the surrounding atmosphere. This activity is responsible
for the seasonal movement of timber. Western Red Cedar
however, has a very low shrinkage factor and therefore resists
the forces that create warping, twisting and checking.

Western Red Cedar is rated as Class 1 under the Australian
durability ratings. That is, the timber has a high natural
resistance to decay and termite attack. Timbers of this rating
are most suitable for use in exposed, aggressive environments.

AIR DRIED
To extract the best performance from Western Red Cedar,
Timbeck employs the reliable and traditional method of
seasoning known as air-drying.
Air-drying ensures the timber has reached a uniform state of
dryness throughout the thickness of the board. Air-drying
preserves the integrity of the cell structure that is so important
to the performance characteristics of Cedar. This method
produces a product that achieves maximum dimensional
stability and is ready to accept finish coatings as required.

ESTIMATION
To determine the lineal meterage of paneling required you
simply multiply the square meterage of area you want to
panel by the coverage factor contained in the grid below.

PRODUCT SELECTED COVERAGE FACTOR

206S / 206R 7.52
204S / 204R 11.90

INSTALLATION
Contained here is the general information relating to
installation of Timbeck Panelling. For specific recommendations
in relation to your installation please contact TIMBECK CEDAR
PRODUCTS on (02) 9709 4466.

Site Conditioning
Timbeck Internal Cedar Panelling is a natural product and like
all timber products should be allowed to acclimatise to local site
conditions prior to installation. This process minimises the
potential for moisture induced movement of the boards.

Laying Out
Timbeck Cedar Panelling can be installed randomly as it presents from the
pack. Some pre-selection however can allow the installer to manipulate the
colour gradations to suit the application.

The installation should allow for the natural seasonal movement of timber.
A 6mm gap all round the installation will be sufficient for this purpose.
This gap can be covered by a variety of cover strips (see Timbeck Mouldings
brochure for the full range). If the selected panel is to be coated in a clear
varnish or paint finish then one coat should be applied to both sides of the panel
prior to fixing. Follow the instructions contained below under the heading "Finishing".

Fixing
Insulation - If insulation is to be installed, Timbeck recommends the use of
perforated insulation film to allow the timber to breath. It should be
noted that Western Red Cedar naturally provides a high degree of
insulation due to its lightweight cellular structure.
Battens - We recommend batten centers of 450mm to 600mm for all internal
panel products.
Nailing - Typically 1.6mm galvanised or electrically plated nails are used to fix
Timbeck Internal Cedar Panelling. The nail should be 30mm long. The
use of brigh steel nails is not recommended due to their potential to stain
the board as they rust. As indicated on the drawings, panel products
are generally secret nailed.
Finishing
Sanding - All sanding should be with a good quality 400grit wet and dry paper.
Panels should be slightly sanded prior to first coating. Subsequent
sanding between coats is then required to remove the "nibs" from
previous coats.
Staining - If desired, the panels can be stained with any good quality oil, spirit or
water based stain. Refer to your manufacturer's instructions for application.
Special Applications
Some installations of Timbeck Internal Cedar Panelling require additional
attention. For example, in wet areas panels should be coated on the end grain
to minimise moisture uptake. If you are unsure about your requirements please
contact the Western Red Cedar Information Centre.
